Steps to Protect Your Computer

The Edison Chen sex photo scandal further highlights the importance of securing your sensitive files in your computers. For those who are not sure how to protect the informations in your computer, i found these useful steps from "My Paper".

Keep Files Secure:

1) Copy your files into a portable storage device, such as a thumbdrive or an external hard disk (HDD), and delete the originals in your computer. Set passwords on the HDD for extra security.

2) Encrypt your data with specialised software such as WinMagic's SecureDoc or TrueCrypt 5.0, to prevent others from reading the hard disk in plain text.

3) Use low level formatting software like EraserDisk or Paragon's Disk Wiper to completely erase files.

4) Run a very strong magnet or a degausser over the HDD. Fujitsu's Mag EraSURE can also permanently remove information on magnetically recorded media.

5) Remove the HDD before sending your computer for repairs, if the problems does not lies with it.

Hope the above informations would be helpful to everyone :> i'm going off to Korea today and would not be updating my blog for a week. I'm looking forward to lots of shopping and eating there. Would take lots of pictures and post on my blog when back next week. Till then take care everyone!
