Happy Music, Healthy Heart

(Source: Shape Magazine Singapore, February 2009 Edition)

Listening to joyful music can help your heart, researchers from University of Maryland found. When volunteers listened to music that made them feel happy, their blood vessels dilated by 26%-a positive effect that is similar to the response seen after cardiovascular exercise. On the other hand, listening to music that brought out anxiety in volunteers-likes heavy metal-caused blood vessels to be narrowed by 6%. "These results were music to my ears because they signal another preventive strategy that we may incorporate in our daily lives to promote heart health," says lead researcher Dr Michael Miller.
